How to effectively learn: ten good and bad ways

Scientists from the University of Kent studied how effective individual learning strategies. It was shown that the most frequently used methods are the least effective.

Each of us has his ways trying to get into the head of the necessary knowledge. Someone underscores, someone highlights, someone reads aloud and everyone works something else. At Kent State University decided to choose ten most common learning strategies and measure their effectiveness. We ordered from you is the least efficient to the most efficient.

** Few effective ways **

  • Do you read it twice … *

Repeatedly reading the one of the least effective techniques. It makes sense – it's also one of the most passive. It often happens that a man reads a paragraph several times, but actually perceive what the text is about. Repeated reading spread over a longer period works significantly better than reading several times consecutively – worth certainly read the text better every one but three consecutive days before the last three days before the test.

  • End of highlighters in Bohemia *

Highlighting and underlining is a very common way of study. In fact, its efficiency is similar to the actual reading of the text, requires no active participation, even underlining can fly. Certainly it is a way to keep their eyes in the text.

  • Mnemonics *

Some are good – it saves the ass of Geography (6378 km – the radius of the Earth), O lady, also remove the bra of Chemistry (chalcogens – sulfur, selenium, tellurium, polonium), Brett returned Himself Government of history (a sequence of rulers Bretislav Soběslav, Wroclaw, Vladislav). Some you really get stuck in your head forever. According to US research, however, mnemonic function more in the short term, ie as a tool just before the test, than it would be for them could rely in the next months.

  • Visualization substances *

Making images is a skill that not everyone in equal measure. According to differ, and how this strategy works. Generally, however, showed a particularly effective – work better when the material students read to someone other than when simultaneously having to concentrate on reading the text. Useful in understanding the substance did not show or drawing.

  • * Written summary

Write a summary of the text is indeed more useful than just reading through and to underline, but the most effective way it is not. In particular, it does not help when learning the lyrics of „multiple choice“. For tests with open-ended questions, this method is more suitable.

** Medium-effective strategy **

  • Thorough questioning myself *

Treat yourself questions about the curriculum (for example in the sense of „why it is so“) already requires some thinking, active involvement own head. Therefore, it is a relatively effective way, particularly with regard to time. But it is a technique that requires you to be in the substance has at least a little orientation.

  • Explaining the substance himself *

When in the course of learning imagine myself as his student and explain himself substance, forces you to engage your head again, and reword the text in your own words. Therefore, this technique is effective, although more time consuming than the aforementioned interview.

  • Striped learning *

Even the brain tends to be tiring. It therefore appears useful to interleave learning other activities, such ideally involving the movement, alternate type of stimuli and method of study. As well as distributed learning time and learning stripe is shown to be significantly more effective than learning in blocks.

** ** Methods of Champions

  • Mock Tests *

Probably because it requires the greatest activity on the part of the student's test mock one of the most effective learning strategies. From this point of view is not the happiest experience of universities, where students usually waits until the final exam, which, although with great effort learn, but it immediately forget all substances. Even more effective than testing the possibilities are those with open questions. A variant of the self-testing should be pulling cards (with words, data, etc.), you can also try to be like „Anki“: http: //ankisrs.net/.

  • Exploded learning *

Most of the students are trying to get the cloth to the head at the last minute before the exam. It turns out, however, that it is the worst way to try to remember something. Much better is to give you a break between learning, depending on how long and how thoroughly you need to remember substance. Read the text again need a few days break will have much better results.
